Just finished another 6-hour math grind today after ages! Slowly getting back into the routine 💪

I plan to post again daily, or every two days on stuff I'm working on.

Honestly, I've lost momentum after traveling a lot and catching a long-ass cold. I'll slowlyyyy be building it back up.

Current stage: slowly returning to math grind

As a marketer, I took many things for granted (thanks to no-code tools), but coding my website from scratch has been fun & rewarding 🫡

Here's what I've done/learned in the last 20+ days:

Built a static website with Astro framework (I really enjoy using it)
Got on top 5. pos on HackerNews, which was totally random but exciting (thanks, @justinskycak)
Learned all the little parts like querying posts/progress reports on pages, implementing SEO metadata, setting up RSS feeds, sitemap, etc.
Covered basics of speed optimization
Finally uploaded all the progress reports & wrote a few blog posts (that took forever)
Still picking up the basics of JS

Lifestyle wise

Good:

Excited to go to Singapore/Malaysia next month
Been consistent with gym & diet for the last 10 days

Bad:

Need to return to sleeping early and waking up early
Haven't done ANY math except for a bit today, but FIXING that tomorrow!

I doubled down on exercises and started reading the math textbook more. I realized I had gained a false sense of confidence from just watching videos and not testing it on paper.

Basically didn't do anything brand new; just did exercises on previously covered areas, namely:

Calculating derivatives, critical points, concavity/inflection points, min/max, some graphing, limits as x -> ∞, etc.

Next is more sketching, then optimization problems & integrals.

Forgot to post yesterday: I guess I got lost in math 😉💀

On the fun side:

had good concentration
slept well (2.5h of deep sleep)
trained both days

My productivity was trash yesterday, but today, I feel like I did well.
I'm using logs I learned earlier, comfortable with the chain rule, and things are making sense.
I wish things went faster, but I'm unfortunately not naturally talented at math :)

Realized I didn't understand logarithms well, so I spent two days re-learning them. Covered properties, solved exercises, and explored their applications. 👌

I never cared about math in school because I never thought I'd need it. I was busy learning marketing, running a business, and making money. It only became important to me recently when I started to pursue machine learning.

Need to do some dopamine detoxing (writing code unironically is 10x more fun than doing math)

made two very basic linear regression models for mapping the relationship between hours studied & test scores for students. (details below)

day 1:

model 1: created synthetic data and played around with various Numpy rand functions model 2: downloaded a random Kaggle dataset to practice on real data

my pseudo-code: 0. create a synthetic dataset or download a real one

use pandas to manipulate the file & wrap it into a data frame
split the data for training and validation
predict on the data using scikit-learn lib
evaluate (R2, MSE)

day 2:

watched the Beginner Intro to Neural Networks video series by giant_neural_network on YouTube.

I really liked how he visualized the use of derivatives from calculus to minimize the loss function regardless of the starting point on the curve.

I felt happy finally understanding the basic math of it. Unfortunately, I still haven't learned partial derivatives, so I didn't memorize the formula when there are multiple variables. RIP.

Overall happy with the progress. 🫡

Calculus is trickier than I thought! 😫 The top-level concepts are simple to grasp, but there seems to be a maze of formulas and computation tricks to get through.

I've spent the majority of my time doing exercises (like calculating limits that use trig functions) to really get it down. One thing that books do a better job at than courses is providing extensive math notation.

Props to 3b1b’s essence of calculus for making the visuals click.

I'm debating whether Calculus is something I can 'sprint' through. Beginning to think it will take time to 'marinate'.

I'm curious: How important are the calculations and remembering formulas going to be for coding (ML)? How much can I skip (or sprint through) here without long-term consequences? Any general tips?

Anyway, expect the next progress report in 2 days 🫡

Continued reading the FastAI book & watching the course; learned more top-level concepts and wrote code but disliked all the simplified wrappers.

Things I found interesting:

Feature Engineering: a process of using domain knowledge to extract and create features (input variables) from raw data that make machine learning algorithms work more effectively.
Pattern Recognition: A pretrained model has learned patterns and relationships from a wide array of datasets. For instance, it might have learned that in healthcare data, the ratio of two lab values (like cholesterol level to age) often provides more predictive power than those two values separately.

Started the FastAI course - amazed at how practical it is.

Book highlights so far: "if you regard a neural network as a mathematical function, it turns out to be a function that is extremely flexible depending on its weights. A mathematical proof called the universal approximation theorem shows that this function can solve any problem to any level of accuracy, in theory."

Positive Feedback Loops:

predictive policing model created from past arrest data reflects existing biases, predicting arrests rather than actual crime

beginner stuff, but still fascinating to me.

Spent 4 hours learning more math today

Mostly learned everything about math sequences 🫠 Tomorrow it's pre-calculus time.

If someone told me I'd be doing school math after joining the workforce, I'd slap that person.

With the current pace, it will take more ~ than 20 days (so the end of March) to finish pre-calculus and calculus at Khan Academy.

I could finish it faster, but I'm optimizing for understanding and retention, so I don't want to rush it too much.

Good thing I don't have followers.

Mood: Great
Spent 6 hours learning just math today

I never include break times when specifying daily learning time. So any 5-minute break is excluded from time-tracking.

Finally finished a long-ass functions unit. Tomorrow, more math 🫠

Things I did good today:

didn't mess up food, so concentration was high
studied in batches & started early - 2 hours, then break, repeated 3x
found time to watch a 1.5-hour speech on the purpose of life recommended by a friend (the Quran POV)

Mood: Better than yesterday! ~4.5 hours of learning today

Today, I was 'mathing'.

Wanted to start learning calculus, but then realized I didn't even master pre-calculus first (my fault I ignored math classes as a kid, lol)

Things I did good today:

Didn't poison myself with trash food
Went hardcore in the gym
Put my phone away

The only metric I care about is the # of concentrated hours studying/day.

Mood: meh ~3 hours of learning today :(

started watching Google's ML crash course
learned of different ways of reducing loss (L1, L2/MSE)
realized I need to learn differential calculus, partial derivatives, gradient for gradient desc

Things to improve:

Start working earlier in the day so you can finish by 8 PM with proper concentration
Less distractions (close all those damn tabs)
Avoid trash food that creates brain fog

~4.5 hours of learning today

Re-learned Perceptrons: net input function, activation function, objective function, and loss function.
Learned Adaline single layer NN and its workings.
First introduction to gradient descent, specifically stochastic gradient descent (SGD).
Learned convexity and what a convex loss function means, including local and global minimums.
Basic understanding of mean squared error (MSE) loss function.

Things to improve:

Increase study hours (try 6 hours tomorrow)
Remove phone from desk to avoid distractions (place phone in another room?)
Build up on general ML/Math/Statistics knowledge to learn new material more easily.

Month 1 goals (March 2024):

Complete all Khan Academy statistics courses.
Make progress in reading and implementing the book "Machine Learning with Pytorch and Scikit-Learn."
Figure out how to create a basic GUI for my terminal prototypes.
